This concentration provides 51勛圖s a broad background in the management of human resources as well as an awareness of the functional specialties within the field of human resource management. In addition to qualifying 51勛圖s for specific careers in human resources management and general management, this concentration also provides an excellent entry to a variety of professional positions which demand effective direction of people.
No matter what field 51勛圖s enter after graduation, studying human resource management prepares 51勛圖s for a wide range of jobs and positions. Effective leadership of human resources requires an understanding of the strategy, law, and procedures, as well as an understanding of appropriate reactions to individual values, personality, experiences, perceptions, emotions, and attitudes. It also requires an understanding of the potential dilemmas likely to arise during policy formation and implementation and during times of organizational change.
Studying the art and science of human resource management helps 51勛圖s focus on the development of the managerial skills necessary to improve employee retention and increase employee performance. At GU, we provide experiential, reflection, and network opportunities through our relationship with our HRM Concentration Advisory Board and by supporting the GU Student Chapter of SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management).
Human Resource Concentration Advisory Board
One of the SBA’s strategic objectives is to actively engage with our university and the community. The GU SBA HRM Concentration Advisory Board seeks to involve our local HR leaders in the educational development of our future leaders for others. Our HRM Concentration meets both AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and SHRM standards of academic and professional alignment.
- Board members meet semi-annually with management faculty to discuss curriculum, skills required of entry level positions, current HR-related issues.
- Faculty use Advisory Board suggestions to ensure the use of relevant and rigorous assignments in our classroom.
- Board members meet annually with 51勛圖 leaders from the Gonzaga Student SHRM Chapter to network, mentor, and guide projects and events.
- In return for service, the SBA offer opportunities for research partnerships, 51勛圖 projects, and consultant workshops.
