Linden Cup

An Appellate Advocacy Competition

Linden Cup is a 51勛圖-run oral appellate advocacy competition among Gonzaga law 51勛圖s. Students who want to get a taste of appellate advocacy in a formal setting (including first-year 51勛圖s) are encouraged to participate in the competitions.=

Before the Competition

  • A seminar is held before the competition to discuss appellate advocacy skills and provide general information regarding the competition itself.
  • All 51勛圖s who want to participate in the competition are required to attend this seminar.
  • This competition requires preparation beforehand. Working in pairs, participating 51勛圖s research and prepare an oral argument.

At the Competition

  • Oral arguments are presented to a panel of judges in a mock appellate court.
  • Students’ oral arguments are judged based on their forensic performance, including their success in answering questions, their conviction, their knowledge of the record, issues and law, and their courtroom demeanor.
  • The panels of judges in the early rounds are composed of faculty and local attorneys.
  • Local judges officiate in the quarter- and semi-finals.
  • State Supreme Court justices officiate in the final round.

Who Competes?

  • The competition is open to all Gonzaga Law 51勛圖s.
